Best Nitro RC Cars UK 2026 — Trucks, Buggies & Street Cars

Four nitro RC cars: FTX Carnage NT, FTX Zorro, HPI Vorza Buggy Nitro and Kyosho USA-1 Nitro

The best first nitro RC car is the FTX Carnage NT: a ready-to-run 1:10 truck at about £220 that takes FTX’s proven electric platform and adds an engine. For racing, the HPI Vorza Buggy Nitro arrives ready to run with a Star F3.5 V2 engine. For the full nitro monster truck experience, it is the HPI Savage XL 5.9 or the Kyosho USA-1.

Nitro is noisier, smellier and more involved than electric, and that is the point for the people who love it. If you are still deciding, read nitro vs electric first. The seven picks below are ordered by price.

What you need besides the car
A nitro car needs a few things an electric car does not. Most are cheap; all are essential.
Fuel
Nitro fuel
Model engine fuel, bought separately. Keep it sealed, cool and away from children.
Starting
A glow starter
Heats the glow plug so the engine can fire, such as the Fastrax glow starter.
Filling
A fuel bottle
A squeeze bottle with a fine nozzle for filling the tank.
Looking after it
After-run oil
A few drops after each session stop the engine corroding inside.

1. FTX Carnage NT: best first nitro truck

FTX Carnage NT

FTX Carnage NT 4WD RTR 1/10th Nitro Truck

1:10 scale, 4WD, nitro engine, ready to run

£219.99

View product

FTX took its best-selling electric Carnage and gave it an engine. The result is a 1:10 4WD truck with the same tough platform and the noise, smell and fuel stops that make nitro what it is. Of the trucks we stock it is the cheapest way into running an engine.

Best for: bashers who want to find out whether nitro is for them without spending a fortune. Watch out for: the first few tanks. A new engine has to be run in gently before it gives its best, and the manual covers how.

2. FTX Banzai Nitro: best nitro road car

FTX Banzai Nitro

FTX Banzai 1/10 Street/Drift Nitro 4WD RTR Car – Blue

1:10 scale, 4WD, nitro engine, street and drift body, ready to run

£219.99

View product

The Banzai is FTX’s long-running on-road car, and the Nitro version adds a real engine note to the slides. It is a 1:10 4WD street car, happiest on a smooth car park or a tarmac track where the engine can rev.

Best for: on-road fans who want sound with their speed. For electric drift cars see our best RC drift cars guide. Watch out for: grass and gravel. It is a road car, and debris is not good for an engine’s air filter.

3. FTX Zorro Nitro: best scale nitro truck

FTX Zorro Nitro

FTX Zorro 1/10 Nitro Trophy Truck 4WD RTR – Orange

1:10 scale, 4WD, .18 pull-start nitro engine, trophy truck body

£224.99

View product

The Zorro mixes a desert trophy truck body with a .18 pull-start nitro engine. Pull start means no separate starter box, which keeps the kit list short, and the semi-scale looks make it one of the more realistic-looking nitro trucks at this price.

Best for: drivers who want realism and noise in equal measure. Watch out for: the pull start. It is simple, but a flooded engine needs clearing before it will fire, so read the starting section of the manual first.

4. HoBao Hyper VS: best for builders

HoBao Hyper VS

Hobao Hyper Vs 1/8 Buggy Nitro

1:8 scale nitro buggy, 80% pre-assembled, add your own engine, servos and radio

£274.99

View product

The Hyper VS arrives 80% built, without an engine, servos or radio, so you choose and fit your own. That makes it the pick for anyone who wants a 1:8 race-style nitro buggy and wants to understand every part of it. HoBao’s chassis has a reputation for handling jumps well.

Best for: experienced drivers stepping up from ready-to-run cars. Watch out for: the total cost. Engine, servos, radio and starter equipment are all extra, so price the whole build before you start.

5. HPI Vorza Buggy Nitro: best nitro race buggy

HPI Vorza Buggy Nitro

Hpi Racing Vorza Buggy Nitro

Vorza chassis, Star F3.5 V2 engine, fully adjustable suspension and drivetrain

£424.99

View product

The Vorza has a long race record, and this version arrives ready to run with HPI’s Star F3.5 V2 engine fitted. Suspension and drivetrain are fully adjustable, so it can be set up for a club track as well as driven hard in a field.

Best for: drivers who want a race-capable nitro buggy without building one. Watch out for: the learning curve. A race buggy rewards tuning, and engine tuning takes patience.

6. Kyosho USA-1 Nitro: best nitro monster truck

Kyosho USA-1 Nitro

Kyosho USA-1 Nitro 1:8 RC Nitro 4WD Readyset w/KE25SP2

1:8 scale, 4WD, KE25SP2 engine, licensed USA-1 body, Readyset

£445.99

View product

Kyosho’s USA-1 is a licensed replica of a famous full-size monster truck, and this is the nitro Readyset with the KE25SP2 engine. It is a big, heavy 1:8 truck built for bashing, with the presence that only a large nitro truck has.

Best for: drivers who want the classic nitro monster truck experience. Our best RC monster trucks guide has the electric alternatives. Watch out for: space and noise. It needs room to run and somewhere you can make a racket.

7. HPI Savage XL 5.9: the classic

HPI Savage XL 5.9

Hpi Racing Savage Xl 5.9 GTXL-6 – Blue

5.9cc engine, extended TVP chassis, long wheelbase, wide stance

£599.99

View product

The Savage has been the reference nitro monster truck for more than twenty years. The XL 5.9 has a 5.9cc engine, an extended twin-plate chassis and a long, wide stance that keeps it stable on rough ground. Parts support is as deep as it gets.

Best for: enthusiasts who want the truck everyone else is measured against. Watch out for: the kit version. We also stock the Savage XL Nitro SBK, a self-build kit; make sure you are buying the one you want.

What to know before buying nitro

Running in. A new engine is run in over the first few tanks at gentle throttle and a rich mixture. Skipping this shortens its life.

Tuning. Nitro engines have needles that set the fuel mixture. Small adjustments make a big difference, and the weather changes the right setting.

Where you run it. Nitro is loud. Choose open land away from houses, and check with the landowner first.

Cleaning. Engines leave an oily residue. Wipe the car down after every run and use after-run oil before storing it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best nitro RC car for a beginner?
A ready-to-run 1:10 truck such as the FTX Carnage NT. It is tough, forgiving and comes with the engine fitted, so you only need fuel, a glow starter and the basic tools.
Are nitro RC cars faster than electric?
Not any more, in most cases. Modern brushless electric cars are as quick or quicker. People choose nitro for the sound, the run time and the involvement. Our fast RC cars guide lists the quickest electric cars.
How long does a tank of nitro fuel last?
It depends on the engine and how hard you drive, but most cars run for several minutes per tank and refuelling takes seconds, so a session is limited by your fuel supply rather than battery charging.
Do I need a starter box for a nitro RC car?
Not always. Pull-start engines such as the FTX Zorro’s start with a cord. Some engines need a starter box or roto-start system. Every nitro engine needs a glow starter.
