Common RC car problems — and how to fix them
A quick reference to the setup and running faults we see most often on electric RC cars, trucks and buggies. Use the diagnostic tool above to be walked through your exact symptom step by step.
RC car won't turn on
Totally dead when you flick the switch — no lights or beeps.
- Charge the pack fully and push the connector fully home.
- Check for reversed polarity, pinched wires or a failed on/off switch.
- A burning smell means a short — disconnect immediately.
Powers on but won't move
Electronics are live but pulling the trigger does nothing, or the motor just whines.
- Make sure the radio is bound and the ESC armed at neutral throttle.
- Calibrate the ESC throttle range (neutral, full throttle, full brake).
- A whine with no drive = stripped spur gear, loose pinion or a dropped driveshaft.
No response to the transmitter
The car powers up but ignores the sticks, or only one channel works.
- Fit fresh transmitter batteries and select the correct model memory.
- Re-bind the receiver until its LED is solid.
- One dead channel: swap the servo plugs to isolate a lead, device or receiver port.
Steering problems
Off-centre, pulls one way, twitchy, or limited lock.
- Centre the trim, then re-fit the servo horn one spline at a time.
- Twitching is usually low receiver voltage or interference, not the servo.
- Set steering endpoints so the servo doesn't strain (buzz) at full lock.
Grinding, slipping or vibration
Nasty drivetrain noises, slip under power, or shaking at speed.
- Reset the gear mesh with a slip of paper's backlash; replace stripped gears.
- Slipping under power: adjust the slipper clutch or check the diffs.
- Vibration at speed: tighten wheel nuts, check for a bent driveshaft or unglued tyre.
Overheats or cuts out mid-run
Power fades after a minute, or parts are too hot to hold.
- Fading power that returns after cooling = thermal cut-off; gear down and improve cooling.
- Cuts out until a battery swap = LiPo low-voltage cut-off; recharge and check cells.
- Keep motor and ESC under about 70-80C.
Glitching or loses signal
Random twitches, or control drops out at a distance.
- Range loss: fresh transmitter batteries and route the antenna up its tube.
- Twitching up close: a weak BEC/pack browning out, or electrical noise.
- Separate the receiver and antenna from the motor and power wires.
Battery and charging
Won't charge, short runtime, gets hot, or looks swollen.
- A puffed or swollen LiPo is a fire risk - stop, isolate and recycle it safely.
- Won't charge: set the right chemistry/cell count and plug in the balance lead.
- Short runtime: check capacity, gearing, age and that it reached full charge.
Handling and setup
It drives, but it won't corner, traction-rolls, or feels bouncy.
- Understeer: grippier front tyres, thinner front diff oil, a touch of front toe-out.
- Traction roll: lower the ride height and centre of gravity; add sway bars.
- Change one thing at a time and test between each.
