What to look for in a buggy

Brushless or brushed. Brushless is faster, more efficient and needs less maintenance. Brushed is cheaper and calmer, which suits younger drivers.

Oil-filled shocks. They keep a buggy settled over bumps. Every pick here except the very cheapest has them.

Ground clearance. Buggies sit low. That makes them fast and stable, but long grass stops them. For rough fields, look at a truck instead.

Spare parts. Buggies get crashed. Arms, driveshafts and wheels should be easy to buy, and for every car here they are.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best RC buggy in the UK?
For most people, the WLToys 124017 V2: brushless, well built, listed at 75 km/h and about £130. For a bigger buggy, the ZD Racing Pirates3 BX-8E.
Is a buggy or a truck better for a beginner?
A buggy is faster and handles better on smooth ground; a truck copes better with rough ground and jumps. If you are not sure, read our best off-road RC cars guide or look at short course and desert trucks.
How fast is an RC buggy?
Our picks are listed between 35 km/h and 90 km/h. Speed depends on the motor, the battery and the scale.
Are RC buggies good on grass?
On short grass, yes. On long or wet grass a buggy’s low chassis drags, and a truck or monster truck is a better choice.

For trucks and crawlers see the best off-road RC cars guide, and for everything else the RC buying guides hub. If your buggy stops driving, the RC car troubleshooting guide covers the usual causes.
