Best Off-Road RC Cars UK 2026 — Buggies, Trucks & Crawlers

The best off-road RC car for most people is the WLToys 124017 V2, a brushless 1:12 buggy that copes with grass, gravel and dirt for around £130. For rougher ground and bigger jumps, the Rlaarlo Omni-Terminator monster truck and the 1:8 ZD Racing 9021-V3 truggy are the ones to look at, and for slow technical driving the MN 99s crawler is the cheapest way in at about £80.

Off-road covers very different kinds of driving, so the seven cars below are ordered by price and each is matched to the ground it suits. Size matters more off-road than anywhere else, so RC car scales explained is worth a read first, and the hidden costs of RC cars covers the batteries and spares to budget for.

1. MN 99s: best budget crawler

MN 99s

MN 99s 2.4G 1/12 4WD RTR Crawler RC Car Off-Road For Land Rover Vehicle Models

1:12 scale, 4WD, proportional control, working lights, 7.4V battery included

£80.99

View product

The MN 99s is a 1:12 scale 4×4 with a Land Rover-style body, proportional steering and throttle, working lights and realistic rubber tyres. It is slow by design, which makes it ideal for gardens, woodland paths and indoor obstacle courses.

Best for: a first crawler, scale-model fans, and younger drivers who are not ready for a fast car. Watch out for: big obstacles. It is a light trail truck, not a rock racer, and a 1:10 crawler will climb things this cannot.

2. HBX 901A: best budget truggy

HBX 901A

HBX 901A (brushless) 1/12th 4WD RC truck/truggy

1:12 scale, brushless, 4WD, metal driveshafts, full bearings, LiPo included

£125.99

View product

A truggy pairs a buggy chassis with wider arms and bigger wheels, which makes it more stable over rough ground. The HBX 901A is a brushless 4WD example with metal driveshafts and a full set of bearings, and it comes with a 7.4V LiPo and radio. For the money it is hard to find a tougher small truck.

Best for: bashing on rough grass and dirt where a low buggy would bottom out. Watch out for: long, wet grass. At 1:12 the wheels are still small, and the motor works hard when the car is dragging its belly.

3. WLToys 124017 V2: best overall

WLToys 124017 V2

WLToys 124017 V2 1/12th Racing buggy

1:12 scale, brushless, aluminium chassis, oil-filled shocks, battery included

£129.99

View product

Our best-selling car, and the one we recommend most often. The aluminium chassis and oil-filled shocks keep it composed on bumpy ground, the brushless motor makes it properly fast (it is listed at 75 km/h), and spare parts are easy to get. A buggy is the best all-round shape for mixed surfaces, and this is the best value buggy we stock.

Best for: short grass, gravel, dirt paths and BMX tracks, for beginners and experienced bashers alike. Watch out for: ground clearance. It is a low car, so stones and tufts that a truck would ignore will unsettle it.

4. Rlaarlo Omni-Terminator Alloy: best monster truck

Rlaarlo Omni-Terminator Alloy

Rlaarlo Omni-Terminator Alloy MINI 1:10 Scale Brushless Monster Truck, RZ001G-A

1:10 scale, brushless, centre differential, gyro, 5000mAh battery included

£199.99

View product

Big tyres and long-travel suspension let a monster truck drive over ground that stops everything smaller. The Omni-Terminator has a centre differential, steel spiral-cut gears, a gyro for stability and a 5000mAh battery in the box. It is the car on this list we would take to an unknown field.

Best for: parks, rough fields and jumps, and anyone who does not want to think about what surface they are on. Watch out for: rolling over in fast corners. Tall trucks do, and the bodyshell takes the knocks.

5. ZD Racing Pirates3 BX-8E: best 1:8 buggy

ZD Racing Pirates3 BX-8E

ZD Pirates3 BX-8E Buggy 1/8 4WD Brushless RC Car

1:8 scale, 4WD, 4068 brushless motor, CNC aluminium chassis, 3S battery and charger included

£289.99

View product

A 1:8 buggy is the classic off-road racing shape, and the Pirates3 BX-8E is an affordable way into it. It has a CNC-machined aluminium chassis, 120mm off-road tyres and a 4068 brushless motor, is listed at 90 km/h, and comes with a 5000mAh 3S battery and a charger, so there is nothing else to buy on day one.

Best for: experienced drivers who want the speed and stability of a full-size buggy on open, reasonably smooth ground. Watch out for: the pace. It is very quick and needs a lot of room, and a buggy this low still prefers short grass and dirt to rough fields.

6. ZD Racing 9021-V3: best 1:8 for the money

ZD Racing 9021-V3

ZD Racing Pirates Red 9021-V3 truggy 1/8th 4WD RC Car

1:8 scale, 4WD, brushless, waterproof electronics, CNC chassis, 3S LiPo included

£295.99

View product

Moving up to 1:8 changes what off-road means. The 9021-V3 is a full-size truggy with a CNC-machined chassis, oil-filled shocks, aluminium suspension mounts and waterproof electronics, and it arrives assembled with a 3S LiPo. Ground that a 1:12 car has to pick its way through, this simply drives over.

Best for: experienced drivers with access to open land who want large-scale performance under £300. Watch out for: weight and speed. A 1:8 car can hurt someone and break itself, so it needs space and a sensible driver.

7. KKPIT KBT SP Desert Truck: best premium pick

KKPIT KBT SP Desert Truck

KKPIT KBT SP 1/8 Desert Truck – Deep Blue Remastered Edition RTR bundle version

1:8 scale, full-time 4WD, three differentials, adjustable suspension, RTR bundle

£459.99

View product

The KBT SP is a 1:8 desert truck with full-time four-wheel drive, three differentials, hardened steel drivetrain parts and fully adjustable suspension geometry. It looks like a trophy truck and behaves like one, soaking up rough ground at speed with the body rolling and the wheels staying planted. This is the ready-to-run bundle version.

Best for: experienced bashers who want scale looks and a chassis worth tuning and upgrading. Watch out for: the price of entry. It is a serious machine, and batteries and a charger of the right size add to the bill.

What to look for in an off-road RC car

Scale decides where you can drive. A 1:14 or 1:12 car is fine on mown grass, gravel and dirt. Rough fields and long grass need 1:10 or 1:8, because bigger wheels and more ground clearance are what get a car over obstacles.

Four-wheel drive is the default. Every car here is 4WD. It finds grip on loose surfaces, pulls out of trouble and is easier to drive than 2WD, at the cost of a few more parts to maintain.

Waterproof is not the same as submersible. Where we list waterproof electronics, that means splashes, damp grass and puddles are fine. Bearings and metal parts still rust, so dry the car and check it over after a wet run. If a listing does not mention waterproofing, keep the car dry.

Power needs the right battery. Brushless cars run on LiPo packs, and a 3S pack makes a car far faster than a 2S one. Our LiPo vs NiMH guide explains the difference and what charger you need.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best off-road RC car in the UK?
For most people, the WLToys 124017 V2: a brushless 1:12 buggy that handles grass, gravel and dirt and has excellent parts support. For rougher ground choose the Rlaarlo Omni-Terminator monster truck or the 1:8 ZD Racing 9021-V3 truggy.
Can RC cars drive on grass?
Yes, but the size of car has to match the length of grass. Small 1:14 and 1:12 cars are fine on a mown lawn or football pitch. Longer or wet grass needs a 1:10 monster truck or a 1:8 car, otherwise the motor overheats dragging the chassis through it.
Is a buggy or a monster truck better off-road?
A buggy is faster and handles better on reasonably smooth ground. A monster truck is slower in corners but drives over rougher terrain and lands jumps more easily. If you do not know what surface you will be on, a monster truck is the safer choice.
Can I drive an off-road RC car in the rain?
Only if the listing says the electronics are waterproof, and even then treat it as protection against splashes and damp ground. Dry the car afterwards and put a drop of oil on the bearings, which will rust whatever the electronics are rated for.

For other types of car and budget, see the full list of RC buying guides. If your car is not behaving after a muddy run, the free RC Car Diagnostic Bay will help you track down the fault.
