RC planes range from stable trainer aircraft ideal for learning to fly, through aerobatic models capable of full 3D manoeuvres, to high-speed jets and detailed scale warbirds. Fixed-wing flying is one of the most rewarding areas of the RC hobby — combining piloting skill, mechanical understanding and the freedom of open sky.Beginners should start with a self-stabilising trainer before progressing to more advanced aircraft. Browse beginner-friendly models for an accessible start, and pair any plane with quality LiPo flight packs, RC servos and a multi-channel transmitter.

RC planes — frequently asked questions
What’s the best RC plane for a complete beginner?
A high-wing foam trainer with self-stabilising tech (SAFE, AS3X or similar) — for example an electric parkflyer with 1m wingspan. These planes self-level when you release the sticks and recover from upsets automatically. Avoid warbirds and jets until you can take off, circle and land a trainer.
Do I need a licence to fly an RC plane in the UK?
You need to register with the CAA if your plane weighs 250g or more, and pass the free Flyer ID online test. Club-field flying at a BMFA-affiliated site is covered by club insurance. Outside clubs, keep below 120m altitude and 50m from uninvolved people.
What’s the difference between foam and balsa planes?
Foam planes are cheap, crash-resistant and typically sold ready-to-fly. Balsa planes are built from wood kits, look more realistic, fly better in wind — but take 20+ hours to build and are less forgiving in a crash. Start foam, move to balsa once you’re hooked.
How much wind is too much for RC plane flying?
Beginners should fly below 5 mph wind. Intermediates are fine up to 12 mph. Experienced pilots with heavier warbirds or gliders handle 15–20 mph. UK weather means most new pilots fly early morning or at inland RC club sites with tree-line wind shelter.
What’s SAFE technology?
SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) is Horizon Hobby’s self-stabilising flight mode found on many beginner planes. It keeps the plane level, limits bank and pitch angles, and recovers from upsets. Think of it as the fly-by-wire that makes the first 20 flights achievable for anyone.
