RC planes are fixed-wing aircraft flown through elevator, aileron, rudder and throttle inputs from a multi-channel transmitter. Categories include high-wing trainers (self-stabilising, the right beginner choice), low-wing aerobatics, scale warbirds, jets (electric ducted fan and turbine) and gliders.Wingspans run from sub-1 m parkflyers up to 2 m+ giant scale; power is mostly electric brushless on LiPo packs, with petrol and glow nitro common at the larger end. UK pilots flying any aircraft over 250 g must register with the CAA and pass the free Flyer ID test.Foam parkflyer trainers start at £80–£180 ready-to-fly; balsa kits and intermediate aerobatic models £180–£400; large scale warbirds and jets £400–£1,500+; turbine jets considerably more. Beginners should start with a SAFE / AS3X self-stabilising trainer; pair any plane with quality LiPo flight packs, RC servos and a 6+ channel transmitter.

Frequently Asked Questions
A high-wing foam trainer with self-stabilising tech (SAFE, AS3X or similar) — for example an electric parkflyer with 1m wingspan. These planes self-level when you release the sticks and recover from upsets automatically. Avoid warbirds and jets until you can take off, circle and land a trainer.
You need to register with the CAA if your plane weighs 250g or more, and pass the free Flyer ID online test. Club-field flying at a BMFA-affiliated site is covered by club insurance. Outside clubs, keep below 120m altitude and 50m from uninvolved people.
Foam planes are cheap, crash-resistant and typically sold ready-to-fly. Balsa planes are built from wood kits, look more realistic, fly better in wind — but take 20+ hours to build and are less forgiving in a crash. Start foam, move to balsa once you're hooked.
Beginners should fly below 5 mph wind. Intermediates are fine up to 12 mph. Experienced pilots with heavier warbirds or gliders handle 15–20 mph. UK weather means most new pilots fly early morning or at inland RC club sites with tree-line wind shelter.
SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) is Horizon Hobby's self-stabilising flight mode found on many beginner planes. It keeps the plane level, limits bank and pitch angles, and recovers from upsets. Think of it as the fly-by-wire that makes the first 20 flights achievable for anyone.
